| This page shows my personal view of the country of Japan. I visited Japan in 1983, 1985 and 2000. Altogether I spent six weeks in this country. |

| As a tourist, I found Nara to be my favourite Japanese city. It is small and extremely historic.
Its temples include the world's oldest wooden building that still stands in its original location.
In another location one will find the world's largest cast bronze statue. In the centre of the city tame deer stroll the streets. During my Nara visit I managed to catch the once per year outdoors performance of classic Noh theatre. |

| Kyoto is more famous, newer and much bigger. I preferred classic Nara. My spring 2000 visit is shown at my Japan 2000 and Tokyo 2000 pages. I also made short visits to Hiroshima, Osaka and Matsuyama. | ||
| Back in Tokyo I saw some cute school children at the Tokyo Zoo. |

| I also took a photo of some men smoking cigarettes while they wait for the matsuri parade in Akasaka, Tokyo. |

| In 1985 I also spent a day at the Tsukuba International Exposition in nearby Ibaraki prefecture. This is the Sumitomo pavilion building. |

| I have tried to learn Japanese from books several times over the years; unfortunately I usually forget it all as soon as I put the books and tapes away. I got some practice during my recent visit. | ||
