| I took the night train from Madrid and spent four nights in Lisbon, Portugal.
Since my impressions here were very good, I must return some other year for a longer visit. |
| While Lisbon had some fine modern facilities and modern
Metro subway it was the old and decrepit imperial vestiges that were so
fascinating for a tourist. This sleeping lion is guarding a monument near the Cais do Sodre ferry/train/metro terminal. ![]() |
| This section shows funicular railway and an
electro tram in Lisbon. From the heights of extremely steep hills one can look down on the extremely crowded roofs of the ancient Amalfa district.

| By the time I got to Lisbon I had seen to many sights in
a very short time. So I avoided all museums. I took a cross-harbour ferry and
walked the streets. I took the modern new train to Sintra. This is a lovely old town with a spectacular location and several palaces. It is less than an hour west of Lisbon.

I walked down a narrow steep street to the tram route to
the coast. The tram seemed to have recently stopped but the photographic
opportunities were worth the walk.

| From there I took bus 403 to the eastern most point in
Europe and to Cascais. It was a short but fascinating trip. The wild beach view is out a bus window just a few kilometres west of Cascais. I returned to Cascais the next day to dip my feet in the ocean; but the weather in Portugal was cool with showers.

| From Lisbon I took a long flight to New York. My trip was almost complete. |
