Once I had purchased a Eurail train pass, it was necessary to get my money's worth. I therefore added a quick trip to Italy on to my itinerary. I had hoped to travel through Switzerland but the French railways made a sneaky detour to the south so that is one country that I still have not visited.

This is a view from the train window as we traversed the southern Alps. I have attempted a number of photos in this trip from train and bus windows. These pictures have been largely unsuccessful due to high speeds and dirty windows. This one turned out okay
The second photo shows the old and new at the Milan train station.

Train to Milan Milan Station

I only spent one night in Milan. I got a cheap but nice room across from the station and headed to the centre of the city. Besides having the densest concentration of city centre McDonald's restaurants that I have seen, Milan also had a magnificent cathedral -- the Duomo. It is interesting that the churches in the south tend to be lighter and more fanciful on the outside and darker and more gloomy than the north European variety.
The second view shows yet another in my series of tourists taking photos of tourists.
The final photo is from my men in uniform series.

I had a decent, but not great, Italian dinner, slept well and then headed across southern France. As usual, my First Class Eurail pass was only good for Second Class due to crowded conditions.
I spent the night in Montpellier. No particularly good photos but it looked like a very nice town. I spent time staring in the windows of Real Estate agencies and dreaming of alternate circumstances.
In the morning I took the train to Barcelona...
