| New York's World Trade Center is just a memory | |
|---|---|
| In 1970 and 1976 I made very brief visits to New York City and New Jersey. Other short visits to Manhattan were in 1998 and 2000. I travelled to the top of the World Trade Center, the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty. I was privileged to take photos from one each of these great monuments. | |
My 1976 visit was in late November. I visited the World Trade Center's observation deck. I watched as intervals of sunshine danced across mid-Manhattan and dappled the Empire State Building. Will such a photo ever be taken again?

I include 1976 and 1978 photos of the Statue of Liberty standing in the winter sun.

I walk as much as possible when sightseeing. I take the subway and poke into store windows.
The sidewalks are busy but the great cliffs of windows dominate these pictures. Nothing made by man or nature is truly permanent.

An unusual eating establishment is the McDonald's restaurant at 160 Broadway.
Here you see the doorman and some of the staff. It is certainly the classiest McDonald's to be found anywhere.

I made several photos of St. Pauls Chapel on Broadway. The graveyard was a calm oasis before the storm. The World Trade Center towers provided a brilliant white wall rising to the south.

Also in April 2000 I walked over the Brooklyn Bridge. There were magnificent views back towards the great towers of lower Manhattan.
