This page shows my personal view of Bali and Indonesia.
I was privileged to visit Bali in 1975. This page illustrates some local ceremonies and temple visits north of Denpasar.
In the local form of Hindu belief, the sea is the place for death and evil spirits. The great volcanic mountains provide both birth and life. The last big eruption in 1965 killed 10,000 people, but the volcanic ash provides the fertile soil needed to feed a few million people on such a small island.

On March 22 1979 I wrote a letter from Penalokan:
I am perched on the edge of a giant volcanic crater... The losmen or hotel in which I stayed last night is perched on the very edge of the crater with a superb view. It costs Rp 3000 or 75 ¢.
In the middle of the crater was Batur Lake and Mount Batur. Mt. Penalokan was on the edge to my right. The great Ganung Agung and Mount Abang were further away to the right. There was a colourful public market happening in front of my Penalokan hotel.

The people of Bali have always kept themselves close to birth, death and the after life.
