This page shows my personal view of travel in England -- outside of London -- in 1975 and 1984.

In 1975 I hitchiked around central England and up to Northern Scotland. During a brief stopover in September 1984 I travelled across the south from Brighton to Salisbury. I stayed at the youth hostel and awoke before dawn to walk by the Cathedral. I hitched a short ride to Sarum. From there I walked down the road past this ancient milestone. Across the busy secondary highway I saw the much more ancient sight of Stonehenge.

I was impressed with the great York Minster. This is the largest medieval church north of Italy. It had just been refurbished but suffered a fire the next year. There are many rail yards and a great railway museum there.
