This page shows my personal view of the country of Japan.
I visited Japan in 1983, 1985 and 2000. This page shows pictures from the earlier trips.
My spring 2000 visit is shown at my Japan 2000 and Tokyo 2000 pages.

As a tourist, I found Nara to be my favourite Japanese city. It is small and extremely historic. Its temples include the world's oldest wooden building that still stands in its original location. Inside the Todai-ji temple -- the world's largest wooden building -- one finds the world's largest cast bronze statue.
In the centre of the city tame deer stroll the streets. The garden was at my ryokan hotel.

Kyoto is more famous. However, it is also newer and much bigger. I preferred Nara.

I also made short visits into the south. I took the ferry over to Shikoku Island and visited Matsuyama castle.

I visited the classic Torii of Itsukashima on Miyajima Island.

I saw the Kintai-kyo bridge in Iwakuni city.

I have tried to learn Japanese from books several times over the years; unfortunately I usually forget it all as soon as I put the books and tapes away. I got some practice during my most recent visit.
