This page shows a personal view of American Samoa as seen in 1974.
I was near the start of my trip around the world. One of the nice things about airline travel in the seventies was the relative ease of making interesting intermediate stops in places where modern long range jets rarely stop. American Samoa was such a place. I arrived in mid-December 1974 via PanAm from Honolulu.

I spent one night at the ancient Sadie Thompson Inn in Pago Pago (pronounced Pango Pango). There was little to see in the few small town stores; but there was a spectacular areal tramway strung thousands of feet across Pago Pago Harbor to Mount Alava.
The pictures are from the tramway and from the mountain top. (Apparently the tramway was hit by a plane in 1980 and no longer functions).
From Pago Pago I flew to Apia, Western Samoa where I changed from one Polynesia Air plane to another. The final picture is a mid-Pacific atoll view as seen from an airplane window.
