Early in the morning of September 11th, I updated my What's New page. I wrote:
It is now two years since the death of my brother David. May he rest in peace. He sought peace during his years here but rarely found it.

After writing and uploading my web changes, I took a final glance at the financial news before leaving for work. My world changed at that hour. The whole world changes in dramatic ways every hour. People are born every hour. People die every hour. But that hour was very different for me.

Was my brother's life of less importance than that of Bernie Cantor?
David Melle provided comfort to many, entertainment to more and died in 1999.
B. Gerald Cantor founded the Cantor Fitzgerald bond trading firm and died in 1996. Mr. Cantor was the world's principal collector and donator of the Rodin art that has given me so much pleasure. His firm lost more than 600 employees in that hour on September 11, 2001.

Are the lives of the hashish stoned waiters that once fed me on Kabul's Chicken street any more or less important to the cosmos than the lives of those who fed me such a great breakfast and coffee at the train station under the World Trade Center?

My intellect informs me that none of us amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world. My heart tells me that my words and images have importance. My heart continues to beat so I must continue to write, rage and impress this world's pleasures and pains into my psyche and onto these pages.

In mid-September, I walked in the nearby Regional Parks in Hayward and Fremont's Coyote Hills. The colours tended towards brown and beige but that just sets off the startle of the contrasting exceptions...

I took the BART into San Francisco on the last day of September. I really must do this more often. This is a city that normally calms my soul. I walked up Nob Hill, drank some great coffee and did some people watching on Powell Street. San Francisco is the hometown for cable cars, The Gap and Levi's Jeans.

October was busy. I flew to Vancouver early in the month and even had time to purchase a cheap condominium apartment! (I will hold the photos and descriptions until I take possession). This is a downtown Vancouver view from Glen Street.

Last weekend in October I made a long day trip into the Sierra foothills east of Sacramento. The towns were fun and funky. Many remnants remain from California's Gold Rush days. No great photos but some pleasant experiences. Once again I regret living in the rear end of the San Francisco area. California has some great places to live if one has enough monetary resources. Unfortunately I have not joined the select group.

I have done major updates to my New York City and Afghan pages.
