What Was New: May 31, 2002Cortes Island, Vancouver Island, Quadra Island, BC Ferries(Gregory Melle's Web Diary / Blog)

I had my 50th birthday early in May. I treated the day much the same as any other day or at least any other birthday. I did head north on Vancouver Island and spent a lovely few days of leisure beside the water. I lucked out on the excellent picture taking weather.
In early May I did some exploration of places near the city of Vancouver. I have always been surprised in BC how rarely I get to the many places that can only be reached by the BC Ferry system. For long weekend travel I have been much more likely to take my car to the many BC and Washington state highways than to line up for hours in a line-up for an expensive ferry trip. There are many reasons to cross the water though, with many places left unexplored.
The first week of May I did some local exploration. I took nine ferry trips in the process. I lucked out on the weather when you consider that we had local rain and even snow during the previous week. I took many photos of which I present but a small distillation here.
I started with the 'Sunshine Coast' ferry route. This twin water fall was sighted from the Sechelt ferry to Saltery Bay. I drove to the end of Highway 101 in the tiny hamlet of Lund. At the highway's end I saw these men unloading their commercial oyster haul.
From there I retreated back to Powell River for the afternoon ferry across the strait to Comox. I was fascinated with the ten old Powell River Hulks that float as an offshore breakwater for the pulp mill.
My ferry trips presented a number of amazing sights. Consistently clear spring weather is rare in BC. The next three pictures are from that ferry crossing to Vancouver Island. The first two pictures look back towards Powell River.
The next series was made at Miracle Beach the next morning.
My destination was Cortes Island. I visited an isolated house in a scenic location. There was little to do except sit in the sun, read and enjoy the music practice.
Very relaxing. These pictures are looking west towards Campbell River.
Or east across the south shore of Cortes Island.
This final view is on the return from Vancouver Island to the Tsawwassen terminal. I was surprised to see Whistler Mountain so clear in the right rear distance. It must be 100 km away.
