What Was New: August 31, 2002Vancouver Island, BC Ferries, PNE, Abbotsford Air Show(Gregory Melle's Web Diary / Blog)

Vancouver 2002 had some great August weather. I made it to the beach, rode my bicycle and attended a few events. At the beginning of the month was the 25th annual Abbotsford Air Show. The show seemed slightly smaller and more military than my decade-old recollection.
I made a one day visit to Vancouver Island. Some nice pictures looking back at Vancouver and Mt. Baker from the Nanaimo ferry.
There was a lot of log boom and barge traffic in the Gulf of Georgia. BC has not yet completely abandoned its sea and forestry roots.

I attended a Wooden Boat Fest at Granville Island but there were less than a dozen floating boats.
Also made a quick visit to the PNE -- Pacific National Exhibition. It has down-sized several times in the last decade. Much of Hastings Park has reverted to a 'natural' state. Most of the agriculture is in the children's zoo or found in such events as pig races. There is still some old-fashioned merchandising.
A PNE highlight for me was the Monster Trucks Show.
(I love not just Opera, Art and Wine. I also appreciate old cars, classic country music, Vancouver beer-soaked afternoons and an occasional Monster Truck show).
The truck show included some incredible trick motorcycle jumps.
